The Weeknd comes to Kiss Land (a.k.a. South Florida)

The Weeknd could sing the installation manual for an InSinkerator garbage disposal and achieve a cool club vibe.

So it really doesn’t matter that the new song, “Kiss Land,” from his sophmore album of the same name,  is a grim confessional littered with every cliché you can call to mind on the subject of rock star angst.

If this brew of sex, booze, drugs and  strippers  (Fort Lauderdale and Miami are called out by name) is positioned as a cautionary tale (“This ain't nothing to relate to,” he sings at the end),  the parade of self-indulgent, hard-partying misogyny (the more sinister cliché) in the lyrics is hard to fight through.

But like most songs by the alter ego of performer-producer Abel Tesfaye, the 23-year-old spawn of suburban Toronto, “Kiss Land” is a sparkly pop-music bauble dripping with vocals so sweet that listeners may forgive any trespasses.

Hear for yourself when The Weeknd brings his fall tour to the James L Knight Center in Miami on Sept. 28. Tickets  are $37 and $47 and go on sale 10 a.m. Friday on, Ticketmaster outlets and the box office (400 SE Second Ave., Miami; 305-416-5970).  More info:

Below is "Kiss Land" in its non-explicit video form (but be prepared for explicit lyrics). Hit the link for an "official" video for "Kiss Land" that does not include the whole song, but is otherwise visually interesting.
