“I don’t get paid for going onstage," John Mellencamp said in a recent interview. "I get paid for leaving home.” The singer-songwriter found himself a fair distance from that home Sunday night, when he appeared at Mizner Park Amphitheatre for a show that also included the numinous Emmylou Harris, Americana royalty Carlene Carter and Indiana folk duo Lily & Madeleine. Jim Rassol, our ace concert photographer, returned from the show with these photos. Did Mellencamp play "Cherry Bomb"? Uh-huh.

"Break out that muumuu, throw on a Hawaiian lei and download some ukulele tunes," Rod Stafford Hagwood writes in the intro to his new guide to South Florida's tiki bars and restaurants. Rod knows me, so he won't be offended when I tell him, "No. I will not be doing any of that." I may, however, take his advice and visit "a wonderland of wild-hued Waikiki wackness" and other rum-soaked places included on his list, which he promises to update with more tiki venues from throughout the region. Las Olas gastropub American Social recently turned 5 years old, which is roughly 105 in Fort Lauderdale bar-and-restaurant years. American Social, which also has a location in Miami, recognized this milestone with a Saturday block party that Talia J. Medina photographed for this gallery.

Phillip Valys reports on the opening of Non-Prophet Brewing Company, a Boynton Beach brewery that specializes in kombucha, which Valys writes is "a type of fermented beverage made with black or green tea and packed with probiotics." Non-Prophet owner Chris Montelius describes it another way: “In the Venn diagram of beverages, [kombucha] is where beer and soda overlap.” Uh-huh.
