My nomination for father of the year? Sorry, Pop, but it's Ben Crandell, who took his daughter on Sunday night to the BB&T Center for the radio-pop showcase/endurance contest known as the Y100 Jingle Ball. Crandell writes: "For many of the Jingle Ball acts, the tour has been a test of their ability to command such big rooms — the BB&T Center is one of the largest indoor arenas in the country — perhaps validating them as the kind of act that could tour arenas on their own. Some looked more ready than others." Note to Pop: You don't have to take me to the 2018 Jingle Ball. We can always just go fishing.

Christine Dolen reviews Slow Burn Theatre's production of "The Secret Garden," which I am disappointed to report is not based on the Bruce Sprinsteen song. Still, Dolen writes that the musical is "exquisitely moving."

Tickets to see Chris Rock on Jan. 5 at Hard Rock Live went on sale this past Friday. As Ben Crandell reports, the show is part of Rock's ongoing Total Blackout Tour and the same one he brought to the casino in March. As with that previous appearance, Rock is making yet another bid for a Nobel Peace Prize, a MacArthur genius grant and perhaps even sainthood: He's prohibiting anyone from bringing a cell phone into the venue during his performance.

“It’s superstrong, has a pungent flavor, and it smells and tastes just like the real thing.” That's Chip Breighner, a co-owner of Devour Brewing Company in Boynton Beach, telling Phillip Valys about the pair of cannabis-oil beers returning in February to the brewery's taps. If you've ever bummed a ride to a Dave Matthews Band concert and thought, "Boy, if someone could only bottle the way this car smells," these beers are for you.

Some of you are spending this week anxiously awaiting Santa Claus to slide down your chimney or, this being Florida, slip through your doggy door to bring you a bunch of crap you don't need. Me, I'm looking forward to Rod Stafford Hagwood's review of "Volta," the Cirque du Soleil show currently running at Hard Rock Stadium. If Hagwood's reaction to this so-called "human circus" is anything like the one he had to "Kurios," the last inscrutable Cirque spectacle to play the football stadium, we're all in for a happy holiday.
