Let the battles begin.
Five local DJs will face off Friday night at the Passion Nightclub in hopes of winning the Red Bull Thre3Style world title.
The competitors, DJs EPPS, Konflikt, Ciprian, Fly Guy, and Damion Yancy, are known around the South Florida club circuit in their own respective genres.
EPPS, who spins mostly hip-hop, has worked with artists such as Flo Rida, Trina, and the late Heavy D. Konflikt, who mixes live on radio station Y-100, spins regularly at trendy hotspots such as Mokai, SET, and ,Cameo, Mansion. Ciprian has been mixing since the late '90s and spins the best in trance and house music. Fly Guy has taken over the DJ booth at clubs such as Cameo and Arkadia, and Damion Yancy, who frequently plays the club scene in New Orleans, spins a mix of different genres from electro to party classics.
Each DJ gets to spin a 15-min set, which DJ Konflikt says is the perfect alloted time to show off "creativitiy, progression and technical ability." In December, the Miami DJ traveled to gigs in cities such as Las Vegas and Chicago and had to prepare ahead for the contest. "About 90 percent of my set, I made on the airplane," he says. "Instead of sleeping in between gigs, I worked on my music."
They will be judged by their peers: DJs Rusty Greene, Four Color Zack and Laz. The winner will receive a cash prize and advance onto the national competition.
