Watch people skydive indoors. Yup, that's a thing in Davie | Video

Indoor skydiving seems like a contradiction in terms, but that’s exactly what’s being offered at iFly in Davie.

The experience allows people to float and whip around for 60 seconds inside a wind tunnel that replicates the sensation of jumping out of an airplane in a free fall before deploying a parachute.

“We have four fans that are up above the top of the building pushing the air down the side of the building and then though the basement and up through the wind tunnel,” explains Darren Franks, iFly’s assistant general manager. “Each fan is 450 horsepower. It’s pretty powerful stuff.”

This past spring, iFly, which has locations across the country, added a virtual-reality experience in which participants can get the sensation and visuals of skydiving over California, Hawaii, Switzerland or Dubai. The virtual-reality flights cost an extra $20 with the regular wind-tunnel flights. The virtual reality experience is for ages 8 and older.

Flights last 60 seconds. Various flight plans are available, costing from $59.95 to $525 for experienced fliers. First-time fliers get two flights for $79.95. A friends-and-family rate of $340.95 includes 10 flights for up to five people. One of the most popular options for first-time fliers is four flights per person for $127.95. There is also a two-flight option as well as a virtual-reality experience (also 60 seconds) for $121.95.

Participants must weigh less than 300 pounds. Sessions, which include an instructional video and a tutorial, last from about 90 minutes to 105 minutes. Children under 18 years of age need to have a parent or guardian sign a waiver. There is no upper age limit, and fliers can be as young as 3 years old, which is a plus for the instructors who guide participants through the experience.

“I really love getting to be able to share the dream of flight. That’s kind of one of our taglines,” lead instructor Kyle Bell says. “And I genuinely enjoy teaching people to fly, especially kids, because they can’t go out and skydive. And in here we can fly fliers 3 years old and up, and I really enjoy getting to take the kids into the wind.”
