"War Horse," the Broadway hit and tearjerker from British author Michael Morpurgo about a boy and his half-Thoroughbred Joey naturally attracted the directorial eye of Steven Spielberg in 2011. Morpurgo's World War I-set novel may be heavy on sentimentality, but it achieves with its principle animal what Eric Knight did for Lassie and what Spielberg did with an alien: It made us care for a fictional creature. In the case of "War Horse," we're made to care for an animal controlled by puppet strings. The show continues 8 p.m. Thursday through May 19 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. $39.50-$89.50. 954-462-0222 or BrowardCenter.org.
