Purvis Young, the late, great idiosyncratic painter who crafted images of urban degeneration from his perch in Overtown, is the subject of a new exhibit at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. The Miami-born Young, who lived in an abandoned warehouse near the I-95 overpass, frequently depicted the demise of his community with expressionistic landscapes mounted on discarded coffee tables, rusty-nailed plywood, broken furniture, old books and other scavenged materials from the street. His subjects: oblong-headed angels with squinting eyes, semi-trucks roaring down cracked asphalt, figures in silhouette protesting with outstretched arms. The poetic images, painted before Young passed away in 2010, depict saints, angels, urban poverty and the cycle of black oppression in America. "Purvis Young: Works from the Collection" continues through Sept. 22 at the museum (501 Plaza Real, Boca Raton). $5-$8. 561-392-2500 or
