They call it "BiG Cardio" for at least two reasons: It's a goodhearted nonprofit, and it offers enough activities to keep the blood pumping from beginning to end.
The sixth annual BiG Cardio Fitness and Fun Day is set for Saturday in Lauderhill and includes a 5K run-walk, followed by exercise classes and sports tournaments.
The event is held the first Saturday in May, which is National Foster Care Month. It benefits 4KIDS of South Florida, a child-welfare organization that cares for kids who have been removed from their homes due to neglect, abuse or abandonment. 4KIDS is a partnership of individuals, corporations, local businesses, government agencies, foundations and churches serving Broward and Palm Beach counties. The group places children in 17 family-style homes.
The 5K run-walk will start at 7 a.m. At 8:30 a.m., you can break onto the fitness track, with aerobics classes, CrossFit and stationary-cycling classes, or the sports track. The sports tournaments will be spread across the park, with flag football, volleyball, basketball, soccer and kickball.
"It's like a sports-and-gym atmosphere, except it's taken outside," says Joyce Feldman, business development director of 4KIDS of South Florida. There also will be food trucks, an entertainment stage, merchant booths, bungee jumping, rock climbing, miniature golf, a bounce house and concessions. The activities will wrap up at about noon, Feldman said.
Registration, which includes the run, exercise classes and the sports activities, is $30 for adults and $15 for children from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at LA Fitness, 6501 N. Andrews Ave., in Fort Lauderdale. On site Saturday, registration will cost $40 for adults and $20 for children.
The sixth annual BiG Cardio Fitness and Fun Day will take place at Central Broward Regional Park, 3700 NW 11th Place, in Lauderhill. Go to BiGCardio.org.
