South Florida's cycling scene is as diverse as its culture. Some people slip into spandex on a Sunday morning and zip along the roads in packs. Others just slowly cruise the neighborhood on their own. Still others ride the trails at local parks.

Broward County Bicycle Month aims to bring them together. More than 35 activities are scheduled for March, many focused on improving the quality of the ride, says James Richards, a marketing development associate of the Broward County Parks and Recreation Division.

"We'd like to help them proceed with enjoying bicycling in a safe fashion. When you know you're taking the proper precautions, and you can go and enjoy a good time," Richards says.

Although May is National Bike Month, as promoted by the League of American Bicyclists, the Florida Bicycle Association proclaims March as Florida Bicycle Month, because May is too hot. Broward's bike month had been on hiatus since 2008.
