A smoker, a joker, a toker

Ask comedian Doug Benson his favorite time of the day, and he'll most likely say 4:20 p.m, otherwise known as "weed time."

An advocate for legalizing marijuana, Benson will perform his standup Monday at the Fort Lauderdale Improv, where he'll talk about his love of smoking and his documentaries "Super High Me" and "The Greatest Movie Ever Rolled," which is scheduled to be released next year.

We chatted with Benson about his popular podcast "Doug Loves Movies" and his favorite memory of 2012.

You got your start in standup as a dare. Did you ever expect your career to take off as it did?

Pictures: Hollywood Beach Broadwalk

No, but I'm glad it did, because unlike Liam Neeson in "Taken," my particular set of skills are pretty worthless.

Of all the people you've interviewed for your podcast, who has been the most memorable?

There has been no guest as glorious as John Lithgow. An incredible actor, playing along with my silly questions and games. And I was grateful he didn't try to murder me in a bathtub.

Who would you like to interview?

That's what's great about having this podcast. I never know who might come knocking for some podcast time to plug their projects. But my favorite guests are the ones who come on because they like the show. Like Chris Evans, a.k.a. Captain America. He didn't have anything to plug, he just proceeded to get drunk and have fun.

Do you have a funny fan story?

You know I have a terrible memory, right?

Oh, right. Do you think you'll ever stop smoking pot?

If I stop liking it, I will. So far so good.

Why do you think the government won't legalize pot already?

Change takes awhile. The No. 1 reason why it's illegal is because it's always been illegal. Young people are totally down with legalization. Once all the old people are gone, it will be legal. Which is probably not the nicest thing to say in Florida.

What is something your fans don't know about you?

I love Broadway musicals. I even saw that horrible Kathie Lee Gifford musical that closed after a few weeks.

What are your favorite movies?

I love so many movies, but my current favorites are "Scott Pilgrim," "The Dark Knight," which I hope to remake someday as "The Dank Knight," "Rushmore" and "Snatch."

What is your favorite moment of 2012?

Quentin Tarantino told me a joke. That was pretty cool.

Doug Benson will perform Monday, Dec. 17, at the Fort Lauderdale Improv, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, 5700 Seminole Way, in Hollywood. Tickets cost $17. Go to Ftl.improv.com.
