Reeling in the big ones

Teach a man to fish, and a liar is born, the saying goes. But South Florida captains aim to turn anglers into honest men at sportfishing seminars this weekend.

Seven captains are offering expert tips on landing the big ones during the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. The International Game Fish Association School of Sportfishing in Dania Beach is hosting the sessions, running through Sunday.

Bouncer Smith, Ray Rosher and Jamie Bunn and others will deliver pro advice on landing billfish, dolphin and kingfish.

"The captains offer tips for novice anglers and seasoned pros," says Jeff Mackin, who runs the school for the IGFA. "The question-and-answer sessions are really informative, too."

The captains also regularly teach three-hour classes on Tuesdays at the IGFA.

"We use these seminars as teasers to our three-hour sportfishing classes offered on Tuesdays," Mackin says. "After anglers take one class, they usually take more and find success on the water."

Bouncer, of Miami Beach, regularly shares fish tales on WQAM, AM 560 on Saturdays. He'll discuss swordfishing at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

"He'll give great tips on night- and day-fishing, which are two completely different methods," Mackin says.

Rosher, based in Coconut Grove, will talk about sailfish at 2 p.m. Friday.

Upcoming South Florida tournaments will be hosted by Bunn of Bluewater Movements, in Lighthouse Point. He'll discuss kingfish and sailfish tactics at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

"Kite-fishing is his specialty, so expect to learn some great techniques from Capt. Bunn," Mackin says.

The free seminars are Friday-Sunday at the Broward County Convention Center with Boat Show admission. Schedule at or 954-927-2628.
