Something in the way

The only way to get better at something is to practice — or at least try it once — which can be a problem for those tiptoeing into obstacle racing. Cargo nets, climbing walls and barriers just aren't lying around everywhere.

But Michael Jobe and his staff will set some up on Fort Lauderdale beach Saturday, Sept. 7, for Monster the Ultimate Obstacle Challenge.

One course is a one-mile loop, another is about 200 yards, and each contains about 40 obstacles.

"Our concept was to compress the course, because most people don't want to run that far, but they enjoy the obstacles," Jobe said.

The challenge takes place monthly along South Florida beaches. The last two were at Virginia Key. The next will be held Oct. 19 in Hollywood.

"We don't shock people. We don't throw them in the mud or electrocute them," Jobe says, referring to the Tough Mudder, an extreme endurance race. "We just give them some obstacles and make it a huge adult playground."

Monster the Ultimate Obstacle Challenge will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, on Fort Lauderdale Beach. Patrons choose their starting time. An all-day pass costs $79, but codes for a 35 percent discount are available at Living Social and Groupon also offer deals. One-trip fees cost $22 for the long course, $11 for the short course.
