Jen Kirkman: no kidding

Some people refuse to grow up, and that's perfectly OK, comedian Jen Kirkman writes in her book "I Can Barely Take Care of Myself: Tales From a Happy Life Without Kids." The funny gal, a regular roundtable panelist on "Chelsea Lately" and performer in the Funny or Die sketch series "Drunk History," will perform Friday night at the Palm Beach Improv.

Kirkman is known for her witty jokes about living childless, being single and avoiding bad sex. She isn't afraid to be blunt, especially when it comes to talking about one of her favorite topics: sexism.

In 2003, she created with her gal pal and fellow comedian Becky Donohue. Together, they interviewed comics such as Joy Behar, Margaret Cho, Sue Murphy, Amy Poehler and Sarah Silverman. The website lasted until 2006.

Today, on her own site,, Kirkman often posts about her adventures on the road and bits such as how Brenda Walsh, Shannon Doherty's character on "Beverly Hills, 90210," convinced her to become a comic. She claims she'll do standup until her "knees give out," and that she'll write another book after she finishes touring next year.

If you plan on attending Friday's show, Kirkman will be taking photos with fans after the performance. And as she jokes in her book, she'll also be accepting applications for servants. Without kids, she'll need someone to take care of her later in life.

Jen Kirkman will perform 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at the Palm Beach Improv, 520 S. Rosemary Ave., in West Palm Beach. Tickets cost $20. Call 561-833-1812 or go to
