Comedian Pauly Shore is not an airhead. Sure, he loves making people laugh, but underneath it all, he's a smart businessman who likes politics, working out and staying healthy. The former MTV host and star of the films "Encino Man" and "Biodome" brings his standup act to the Fort Lauderdale Improv to promote "Pauly-tics," an online special. He's also giving away $100,000 to one lucky fan, once he receives 100,000 downloads of the comedy special available online at PaulyShore.com.
We chatted via phone about Shore's long-term goal and his days as "The Weasel."
Do you ever feel that people typecast you from your MTV days?
David Spade once said, "We spend our whole career trying to come up with something, and then we spend our whole career trying to get away from something." There's certain people that have done it really successfully … I'm still trying to do it. I'm not trying to get away from the "Weasel," because I don't want to bite the hand that feeds me. But I also want to be able to build a bigger audience, and that comes with time and maturity.
"Pauly-tics" has a lot of political undertones. Do you watch a lot of political TV?
Yes, that's why I did the special. I like to watch what's going on through our news anchors, and I like channel-flipping. I enjoy watching CNN when they bash the right too much, and then I'll go to Fox when they bash the left, and then back to MSNBC.
Does it bother you if some people think you're an airhead?
Eminem once said, "I am whatever you say I am." If people want to call me stupid, that's OK. I know who I am. The people that know me, they see me up early, they see me serious. I'm a release for people. Pauly Shore is almost like Spuds McKenzie. I'm the party animal and the fun guy. I don't want to lose that persona and that style, because it's a gem and it's cool.
Pauly Shore will perform Friday and Saturday at the Fort Lauderdale Improv, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, 5700 Seminole Way, Hollywood. Tickets $22. Go to Ftl.improv.com.
