Local comedians 'Stand Up for Nicolas'

Update: show has been rescheduled for a later date.

A comedian's job is to make people laugh by poking fun at others, and often themselves. But what happens when they come together to raise awareness about something sad?

On Friday at the Fillmore Miami Beach, local comedian Lisa Corrao will join her funny friends John Wynn, Eric DaSilva, Ramon Garcia, Eric Gil, Ronnie Khalil and Dominic Perenzin to perform in a show titled "Stand Up for Nicolas." The event will be a benefit for Nicolas Peruyero, an 8-year-old Miami boy who has Batten disease, a rare, fatal condition that attacks the central nervous system.

Corrao, a show organizer, met Nicolas and his family two years ago. "I was performing onstage, and noticed one of his relatives in the crowd. She had a little jar with Nicolas' picture on it," Corrao recalls. "When I asked her what it was for, we started passing the jar around, and everyone pitched in and gave money."

She and the seven comedians will perform for free on Friday, and all proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Peruyero family. There will also be a raffle with prizes.

Corrao, who has an 11-year-old daughter, has been touched by Nicolas' story. "He was born just like any other boy. But when he was a toddler, his family found out he had the disease," she says. "Over the years, his condition has deteriorated. Now, he's in a wheelchair, and has to be spoon-fed. As a mom, I can't imagine what his family goes through. I really admire how they try to help him."

Stand Up for Nicolas will take place 7:30 p.m Friday, Nov. 8, at the Fillmore Miami Beach, 1700 Washington Ave. Tickets cost $19. Go to
