Books

Emma Brockes: The New York-based, British journalist's critically acclaimed memoir "She Left Me the Gun" begins with the devotional love of her late mother before descending into a tempest of increasingly darker narratives. Or as one New York Times book review likens it, the memoir begins like the "brightly lighted entrance to a scary ride at an amusement park. You are heading into the churning gloom, where the ghosts are quite real." Her mother was involved in murder, alcohol, incest and robbery during her youth in South Africa, secrets that Brockes uncovers through archives and interviews with extended family members. Brockes will discuss the memoir 8 p.m. Tuesday at Books and Books in Coral Gables. 305-442-4408 or BooksandBooks.com. — Phillip Valys

Theater

Adult Actors' Theatre Workshop Class: The Stage Left Theatre in Boynton Beach is offering a free, one-day-only acting class from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. There are 72 seats total, so call 561-301-5404 to reserve a place. Of course, the idea is to give you a taste of the stage to see if you want to sign up for the four-week course (90-minute classes twice a week) from May 28 to June 20 for $185. The classes will be led by Jeanette Alfaro, a Boynton Beach resident who teaches drama in the Palm Beach County school system. — Rod Stafford Hagwood

Gas cards at Gulfstream: Gas prices are starting to creep up again, and so the deals are starting to return. In this case, Gulfstream Park Racing and Casino offers Fill Up Frenzy all day Tuesday.
