Brightline — the express high-speed train with stops in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach — is offering participants a 10 percent discount on train tickets. All you have to do is use the code DISTFIT on GoBrightline.com. The discount will also be offered for the event Oct. 19-21 in West Palm Beach.

How it all started

“We wanted to do a sort of weekend takeover at the Hilton,” recalls John Parkinson, general manager of the Hilton West Palm Beach. “I saw in some magazine, I forget which, that West Palm Beach was voted the second healthiest city in the country. There are some good looking people here. We’re a beach town, so everyone is in good shape. So we wanted to do something with fitness. The first time we did it was in March of this year. It took off. A thousand people signed up for the fitness classes.”

What will happen at the preview

“First there will be Vixen Workout, which is a dance/cardio workout,” explains Parkinson. “Then there’s a high-intensity interval training or HIIT class by this guy named Anthony Mendez. Every year we try to find something new, you know, because it’s Miami. So this year we have something that is taking the world by storm and that’s a soccer-inspired fitness class. In South Florida you have a lot of soccer fans, so [this class] is all the rage. You’re exercising by having fun learning soccer techniques. If you’re ever played soccer or watched soccer you know they’re all in good shape.”
