Don’t believe everything you read on Twitter — particularly if it involves Publix sub sandwiches.
A blog site based in Miami, The305.com, pulled an April Fool’s joke by reporting that Publix would test stand-alone sub shops in Miami and spread them across Florida.
The news caught fire on social media, and oblivious Twitter followers were still sharing the information Wednesday.
It was all a lie, said Nicole Krauss, Publix’s media and community relations manager for southeast Florida, who was swamped with calls from reporters trying to confirm the story.
“The joke was on us,” she said.
The305.com was gloating Wednesday in a post titled “How we won the Internet.”
“We received more traffic yesterday than we ever have on The305.com,” the blog reported. “Wow. Totally unexpected. Apparently, people ride and die for them subs.”
By the way, the blog also posted an April Fools story claiming that LeBron James was selling his house. Unlike the Publix report, that was labeled a joke.
