Birkin or bust: what to wear to Art Basel

Art Basel is all about the Birkin, but since a large bag costs as much as my car, I'll tell everyone mine "is in the shop." So, if you're Birkin-less like me, but still want to be fashionable at Art Basel, don't fret. You can still look chic.

Grab a scarf instead. Scarves, it seems, is a fashionista's best weapon.  Get one in every color and design to turn a drab outfit into a runway, ready sensation.  Pinks, purples, and plaids are all perfect for fall.

According to style magazines, anything leopard print is in right now.  I've seen some less expensive animalistic tops for sale at such stores as Express and H&M. Pair it with faux leather leggings and booties and you're good to go.

Make a statement with your hair and pretty make-up. Visit the mall for a quick makeover at Sephora (around $30) or curl your locks into soft, beach waves at a blow out bar (around $40).

And, if you're in a funky mood, add a pop of color with a clip-in extension (around $10 at drug stores).

Jewelry is always a easy way to refine your look.  Can't afford Tiffany's?  Add some faux pearls or diamonds. Trust me, no one will know the difference.

Riding boots are a must for your fall wardrobe and the ultimate Basel attire. Pair them with a mini-skirt and cute sweater, or with jeans and a button down top. When in doubt, wear black: the little black dress, black blazer, or black pants look good whatever the label.

Think rich and look rich, but be yourself.  The art world bleeds money and class, but it's also got a wacky crowd full of bohemian-types, starving artists and the I-don't-care-type folks.

When I look in the closet, I see a mix of prep and trendy. Assess your wardrobe, lay out a few outfits, and don't forget to bring the best Basel accessory of all - your smile.
