Glam Doll Strut and Zombie Walk: Stilettos and boas and ghouls, oh my

In auto-obsessed South Florida, when we want to create a scene, make a statement, or freak out the neighbors, we go for a walk. Here are a couple of the more vivid examples of audacious foot traffic:

If you haven’t been able to find a cute pair of pink pumps, it’s because the Glam Doll Strut –– equal parts breast cancer fundraiser, fashionable asphalt catwalk and giddy Mardi Gras-style processional –– takes over Southwest Second Street at Esplanade Park in downtown Fort Lauderdale on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A stilettoed tsunami of pink feather boas, bedazzled and be-fabuloused T-shirts and acrophobia-inducing footwear, the Strut will bring thousands of women, men, kids and pets to sashay (you do sashay, don’t you?) before a panel of celebrity judges for prizes and bragging rights.   The area will also be the setting for a merchandise bazaar offering jewels, fashion, cosmetics, knick-knacks and more (a portion of proceeds go to Glam Doll fundraising). Perhaps you are in the market for a pink taser? You’ll find it here.

No team is too big or too small, and you can create one for $45 per person (tax deductible), or join a team already formed. All money raised goes to local women affected by breast cancer through a partnership with Broward Health Foundation. Info: Glam-A-THON.com.

Equally outrageous, but in a much less pink way, the Fort Lauderdale Zombie Walk infests downtown Fort Lauderdale Friday night with events for all ages of the undead.

Zombie Walk, which last year drew more than 1,000 of the ghoulishly disguised, begins at 7 p.m. at  the Green Room (109 SW Second Ave.) in the Himmarshee District with family-friendly face-painting, a “bobbing for limbs” contest and a kids’ costume competition.

You’ll also find teams of makeup artists, including the always fabulous Keegan Hitchcock joined by Georgette Pressler, who will give you a killer, or killed, look for the Walk. Music, artwork by more than two dozen local artists and the Zombie Ice food truck are other diversions.

At 11 p.m., the Zombie Walk processional will take place, during which you and your fellow Zombies can  fan out to drink and pillage your way across downtown Fort Lauderdale clubs and bars. After the Walk, the Green Room will continue the mayhem for a 21-and-older crowd.

Entry into the Green Room is free, but a makeup package is $10 at the Revolution Live box office and via Ticketmaster
