Lauryn Hill to bring post-prison tour to Miami

The fearless and combustible talent known as Lauryn Hill will widen her post-prison Homecoming tour to include a performance at the 9 Mile Music Festival set for Feb. 15 at the Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds.

The festival is a daylong celebration of the life and values of reggae star Bob Marley, and this year includes two stages of reggae, reggaeton and dancehall performances by Marley’s sons Stephen,  Damian and Julian, along with Sean Paul, Tito El Bambino, Mavado, Chronixx, Ken Y and others.

Best known for the influential R&B solo album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” the former Fugee was released from a Connecticut prison in October after serving three months on tax-evasion charges. A short list of New York-area Homecoming concerts followed.

The extra time for reflection appears to have merely added fuel to her ire for The Man (a new song, “Consumerisim,” offers a fiery speed-rap response) and her confidence:  Hill’s website says she now “finds herself in a place where she can once again live and breathe the art that has brought her to the forefront of our psyches, and has earned her place as being one of the most prolific and thought-provoking artists of our time.”

The reviews so far have been up to the hype, with The New York Times’ Jon Pareles describing the “extraordinary gifts” Hill put on display during a November Bowery Ballroom show:

“Though her voice is lower and raspier than it was when she emerged in the 1990s, she is a supercharged soul singer who stokes her songs all the way through, and her rapping is breakneck, articulate and vehement. She’s also an improvisatory, drama-building bandleader. Throughout her two-hour set, her musicians were watching for her signals; to bear down on a vamp or silence it, to unveil pretty, elaborately planned vocal counterpoint from her three backup singers or to whip up a churchy fervor.”

Advance general-admission tickets for the 9 Mile Music Festival are $57.83 (includes taxes, fees and parking), with VIP tickets $179, at 9MileMusicFestival.com. The Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds are at 10901 SW 24th St.,  Miami. Gates open at 12:30 p.m. and canned food donations will be collected to benefit Curley's House.
