That's using your gourd: Pumpkin Beer Bingo for literacy

Quiz: Is the word “abomination” a synonym or an antonym for “pumpkin beer”? There is a correct answer, but Trudy Reilly’s job with the Broward Public Library Foundation is to cultivate connections, and she is diplomatic.

“I haven’t actually had it, but people really seem to like it. It’s certainly something different,” says Reilly, special events manager for the Broward Public Library Foundation.

On Tuesday at 7 p.m., the BPLF will hold another of its events that aim at a youthful crowd with a special edition of Pumpkin Beer Bingo at the Riverside Market (608 SW 12th Ave., Fort Lauderdale; 954-358-8333).  For a $10 cover, you get a bingo card, $3 pumpkin craft beer, a raffle ticket and access to a pumpkin-carving contest. Prizes include gift baskets filled with books or make-up products or, courtesy of the establishment, beer products.

Proceeds will be dedicated to the nonprofit BPLF’s mission "to provide books and materials beyond what is available through tax-based funding,” Reilly says, from adult and child literacy programs to SAT and ACT training.

The event is hosted by young downtown Fort Lauderdale tastemakers Nila Do and Sara Shake, who helped create a Himmarshee District  happy hour in July called “Reading is Sexy” for the BPLF.

“It’s friend-raising as well as fundraising,” says Reilly, who points out the event is truly all ages, with activities for families with young children and soft drinks available as well. “If we can engage younger groups and educate them as to what the foundation is about, hopefully we hook them for years to come.”
