Ross Mathews brings celebrity dish to Miami Beach

The Vince Vaughn-Owen Wilson comedy “The Internship,” opening in theaters this week, is one tale of revenge on corporate servitude. Ross Mathews has another. And if his is more gracious, it may be all the more entertaining for being true.

Mathews, who brings his hard-to-define stage act to the Colony Theatre Tuesday night, was one of pop culture’s more famous underlings as Ross the Intern on “The Tonight Show.” Using his gift of gab, a memorable voice and a bubbly fearlessness, Mathews went from running mail and coffee backstage to Leno’s chatty, on-air correspondent from red carpets and other celebrity gathering spots.

Now under the wing of pop-talker Chelsea Handler of “Chelsea Lately,” Mathews has his own celebrity talk show in the works and just released a memoir, “Man Up!” Nearly 12 years after his Leno internship, Mathews himself was a book-pushing guest on “The Tonight Show” last month. We trust he was kind to the kid who delivered his Perrier.

Mathews’ tour in support of “Man Up!” is said to be equal parts stand-up, celebrity dish, audience Q&A and plenty of be-who-you-are rosiness. As Mathews says on his website: “Ross has somehow managed to make his mark without ever compromising who he is. Ross is as serious about this as he is about Golden Girls trivia.”
