You're a holiday traveler or a business flier, and you're stranded at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport with terminal boredom.
You can only stare trance-like at your smartphone or tablet for so long. How do you distract yourself from the snaking lines, the crowded chaos, the tempting peanut butter and jelly sandwich cart at the JetBlue terminal?
Here are some ideas to take a break from the airport, at least for a little while.
Screaming for: Jaxson's Ice Cream, at 128 S. Federal Highway in Dania Beach, is a local institution (old-school ice cream parlor and restaurant) with flavors such as Tropical Coconut ice cream and Espresso fat-free yogurt. It's not even a 10-minute drive from the airport. That is, if you can stomach the thought of ice cream on what could be a cold South Florida day.
These old things: While in Dania Beach, check out antique row in the 100 block of North Federal Highway, home to charming galleries and shops including Akiba Antiques and Davidson Antiques.
Fur friends: Broward County's Humane Society sits next to the airport, specifically at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale. Pass the time saying hi to Chichi, a Jack Russell mix, and Lexi, a domestic short-hair cat, and dozens of their furry friends looking for homes. Who knows, you may end up with an extra carry-on.
Roll with it: Play the slots and order afternoon cocktails at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, 1 Seminole Way in Hollywood. Not to scare you, but this was the last stomping ground for the late Anna Nicole Smith.
Airport art: Check out one of the newer art installations at the airport in Terminal 1, Concourse B. A series of five videos replaying on TV monitors features an artist's impressions of the airport's runway expansion project. Or, shuffle over to Terminal 2 to see the Lee Wagener Art Gallery, with paintings by local artists. There are more than 30 pieces of art displayed throughout the airport and its garages. Ask customer service for details.
Aquatic history: There's always something to see at the International Swimming Hall of Fame, 1 Hall of Fame Drive, Fort Lauderdale. Check out the life-sized wax statue of Olympic swimmer Johnny Weissmuller, who appeared in those Tarzan films in the '30s and '40s, and photo murals of the Titanic on the sea floor.
Catch this: The International Game Fish Association Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum, 300 Gulf Stream Way in Dania Beach, is aquatic heaven for boaters and anglers. The museum dives into the history of the sport and its notable figures.
Sunny ride: Catch the Sun Trolley, a yellow-and-red community bus that takes visitors to key spots such as Las Olas Riverfront and the Museum of Discovery and Science in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Each ride is 50 cents, or $2 for a day pass, and there are seven routes. Go to suntrolley.com.
New digs: Now that you've seen how many fun things you can do in and around the airport, don't you want to move here? Just dial a real estate agent and start house hunting.
