Six dogs rescued in hoarding case still need homes

Local animal lovers have stepped up to adopt more than a dozen dogs rescued from a caretaker accused of hoarding.

"It just shows you there are people with very big hearts," said Cherie Wachter, spokeswoman for the Humane Society of Broward County.

After the founder of Gigi's Rescue of Hialeah was arrested in mid-April, 25 dogs were taken to the Humane Society. One was in such bad shape it had to be euthanized.

Since then, 18 dogs — including a one-eyed Chihuahua named Spinny — have found homes. Six  are still waiting to be adopted.

One Hollywood woman adopted two Chihuahuas that were inseparable. Spinny is now living in Deerfield Beach. Another dog, Gadget, is in Boca Raton.

Many of the dogs are at least 10 years old and have eye, hip and knee issues.

They are available for adoption at the Humane Society shelter at 2070 Griffin Road, 954-989-3977.
