Apartment in squalor leads to child neglect charge for Lake Worth woman

An investigation into stolen electricity led police to a child living in squalor, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office arrest report.

Roaches, mold and dirty dishes overflowing from the sink are some of the things police said they found a 7-year-old child living with when they walked in to Chasity Lyn York's apartment on Thursday.

Police said she shares the one bedroom apartment with her 23-year-old brother, who was not identified in the report.

Officers responded because the landlord claimed York, 31, was stealing electricity from a neighboring apartment.

An empty fridge combined with the overall condition of the apartment led police to arrest York on a child neglect charge. She also faces failure to appear charges for an unrelated traffic charge.

The child is being taken care of by a relative, according to the Florida Department of Children and Families.

She was booked into Palm Beach County Jail and released Friday after posting $4,000 bail.
