A Lake Worth man didn't think his spanking of a crying boy was that bad but the boy's bruised bottom led investigators to think otherwise, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office arrest report.
Deputies arrested Michael Law, 48, on Tuesday.
The boy's mother said she dropped off the child, who's age and name were not released, at school on Dec. 27 and said he was crying and didn't want to go to Law's home. She picked the child up three days later and told deputies she first noticed a bruise on the boy's lower lip.
Then as the woman prepared a bath for the boy, she discovered a bruise covering the boy's butt. She called authorities after the boy said Law spanked him, according to the report.
The boy told a Sheriff's Office investigator the same thing and when asked why, the boy said "because I was crying." The boy explained the bruise on his lower lip came from Law shooting a plastic disk from a toy gun at close range toward his face.
The investigation continued as the Florida Department of Children and Families were contacted and Law was later questioned about the bruises.
That's when the investigator said Law rolled his eyes and said, "oh yeah, I can tell you exactly what happened, I spanked him."
The Sheriff's Office detective questioned Law when he said he hit the child once but managed to leave a bruise of that size for more than 24 hours.
"Well I hit him hard," Law said, according to the report.
The investigator said the child is expected to remain with the mother and likely have visitations with Law suspended.
A phone call to Law on Wednesday was not returned.
He was booked into Palm Beach County Jail on Tuesday and released after posting $3,000 bail.
