VIDEO Garrett Frazier stands accused of human trafficking and prostitution

An Oakland Park man who thought he was renting a room in his home to a pimp and his customers was arrested on charges of human trafficking and other offenses, authorities said.

Garrett W. Frazier, 33, had advertised a room for rent on Backpage.com that drew the attention of Fort Lauderdale Police's new human trafficking unit, the agency said Tuesday.

During three days in January, Fort Lauderdale police officers posing as 16-year-old prostitutes, and other officers who acted as customers, stayed in the rented room for up to a half hour, according to a complaint affidavit.

Frazier took a 10 percent cut of money from the sex transactions that were staged by police, the agency said.

Frazier's home, in the 1900 block of Northeast 43rd Court in Oakland Park, was searched on Feb. 11 by Fort Lauderdale police and Broward Sheriff's SWAT deputies, Detective DeAnna Greenlaw said.

Seized were a Nissan Murano SUV and a Nissan Altima sedan, approximately $12,000 in cash, about three pounds of cannabis and approximately 16 grams of cocaine, she said.

Though police charged Frazier with three counts of human trafficking and forced sex activity of a child under 18, Broward Judge John "Jay" Hurley found probable cause only for attempted human trafficking.

Frazier was also charged with living off the earnings of a prostitute, renting a space for prostitution, possessing over 20 grams of cannabis and possession of cocaine, according to court documents.

Frazier currently has a pending criminal court case and has served 30 months in state prison after being convicted of cocaine possession, state records show.

Hurley said Frazier's criminal history justified holding him in jail without bond.
