Palm Beach County seeks to prevent manatee deaths

The 390 manatees counted in Broward County during an aerial survey this week was a significant increase over the 161 counted about two weeks ago.

Of those, the majority, 308, were spotted in the Florida Power & Light Co. cooling lakes west of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Because of the cold weather, more manatees should head this way, said Pat Quinn, the county's manatee coordinator. He asked boaters to be extra cautious.

The aerial surveys are conducted as part of the county's Manatee Protection Plan.
