Breathe Deep Pompano Beach 5K for lung cancer research

Lori Wannop doesn't think of herself as a hero, but she has inspired her family to try to help others.

Wannop, 55, of Pompano Beach, was diagnosed with lung cancer back in 2006. (She's pictured here with her two grandchildren, Addison, 5, and Aiden, two months.

"She has been through chemo treatments, radiation, and even surgery in the last six years as she continues to battle," said her son, Adam Eaton, 32.

Eaton's stepfather, Frank Wannop, teamed with LUNGevity, a charitable organization dedicated to raising funds for research and awareness to Lung Cancer, to create a 5K fund-raiser. The second annual run, called Breathe Deep Pompano Beach, is Saturday.

"Her struggles led our family to an inspiration and a vision," said Eaton, noting that everyone from sisters to grandparents are now involved in Lungevity.

Last year's race raised more than $25,000; this year's goal is $30,000.

The details: The Breathe Deep Pompano Beach 5K is at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Dr. Richard J. Porraro Pavilion, 2250 SE 12th St., Pompano Beach. That's near St. Coleman's Catholic Church.

(Personal note: My mom died of lung cancer on April 3 this year in southern Illinois at 83, about 16 months after her diagnosis.)
