Compulsive gambling conference in Orlando

The National Council on Problem Gambling is Friday and Saturday in Orlando, where experts in the treatment of problem gambling will gather from around the country and abroad.

Their focus: best practices, research and treatment developments, with the theme “Pathways to New Possibilities.”

Pat Fowler, executive director of the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling, notes that the conference addresses not only problem gamblers, but those affected by them.

The keynote speaker is Betty White, a Palm Beach native, who survived the gambling addiction of her husband. According to the council's press release, White also will address the question “how can someone succeed after gambling takes everything?"

Sen. Maria Sachs, D-Delray Beach, Senator Dave Roberts and  Fowler will explain the conditions currently affecting the state of Florida in a session "State of the State: Problem Gambling & Gambling Expansion in Florida."

Judge Mark G. Farrell will host a series of mock court case focused on gambling addiction. Many people with gambling addiction also have legal troubles, and these mock court cases will demonstrate how a person with a gambling addition would fit into specialty court cases versus a standalone gambling court, the release notes.

The 2014 conference will be hosted by the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling and held at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress. Conference events will take place on July 11-12.
