Fort Lauderdale man wins $500 a week for life

Donald Hawkins, 54, of Fort Lauderdale, claimed a top prize in the $1 Scratch-Off game, $500 A Week for Life at Florida Lottery headquarters in Tallahassee.

Hawkins chose to receive the winnings in weekly payments of $500 for the duration of his life. He purchased his winning Scratch-Off ticket at First Coast Energy (FCE), located at 15991 Sheridan St. in Davie.

The $1 game launched on Feb. 5. There are two top prizes remaining.

The first Lucky for Life-themed Scratch-Off game was introduced 17 years ago with the launch of Win for Life, a $2 game. It was reintroduced in 1999 and 2000. In 2004, the $10 game Set for Life was launched, offering $5,000 a year for life top prizes. Later, the first $20 Lucky for Life  ticket offering $100,000 a year for life top prizes was introduced.

Here's hoping Mr. Hawkins has a long life, so he keeps collecting that $500 a week.
