Longtime sports-radio talk-show host Andy Slater will present his monthly poker tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek (5550 NW 40th St., 954-977-6700, CasinoCoco.com). It’s normally held on the second Tuesday of the month, but he postponed it since that will be Valentine’s Day.
“This way, all the poker players will keep their significant others happy,” he tells me.
The Andy Slater “See You Later” Poker Tournament starts at 6 p.m. and has a guaranteed prize pool of $20,000. The buy-in is $94 with 10,000 starting units. There are 20-minute levels.
The 940 WINZ AM personality, as usual, will play. Slater says about 250 others will join him in hands of no-limit Texas hold ’em, with about 10 percent being women.
Fox Sports Florida’s Craig Minervini will be one of the tournament’s guest bounties. Slater, too, is a bounty.
He defines the word: “Knock me out, get $200 and a free entry for March. Knock out Craig this month, get a free entry for March.”
Slater, who started playing the card game when he was 20, says over the years he’s probably lost more than he’s won, even though he has cashed in some big tournaments. But he’s having fun.
“It’s entertaining,” he says. “You meet new people. You get into good conversations.”
What’s his greatest strength at the poker table?
“I feel that my reading ability has always been great. That’s the key to my game. But one thing you can’t control is luck. People say, ‘Good luck’ to me before we start. I’m really only looking for average luck. I’d be happy with that.”
On Feb. 3 at Casino Miami (3500 NW 37th Ave., 305-633-6400, CasinoMiamiJaiAlai.com), a lucky slots player bet $50 on a Royal Reels spin and won $73,354, according to marketing manager Francesca Costa. Not a bad Friday night. The winner of the progressive jackpot didn’t want to be named publicly, Costa says.
The biggest day for slot-machine jackpots at Isle Casino Racing (777 Isle of Capri Circle, Pompano Beach, 954-972-2000, TheIslePompanoPark.com) in the past month was Jan. 20. That day, one player won a whopping $149,109 on a progressive hit on the Triple Double Butterfly Sevens, with a max bet of $5, director of marketing Jennifer Swope says. Another person that day won $12,829 on a Lightning Link machine.
