Will the sun shine on Janice Dean at Palm Beach Kennel Club?


This weekend, Janice Dean will attempt a stakes sweep at Palm Beach Kennel Club (1111 N. Congress Ave., West Palm Beach, 561-683-2222,, while earning her owner another $25,000.

The 2-year-old greyhound won the 86th running of Palm Beach Kennel Club’s $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby on Feb. 25.

And she won the $50,000 He’s My Man Classic on Jan. 28.

On Saturday, March 18, Janice Dean, named after a Fox News meteorologist, will race against seven dogs in the $50,000 Arthur J. Rooney Sr. St. Patrick’s Invitational.

In each of the “Big 3” stakes at PBKC, the winner earns half the added purse, and the second half gets divided among the other runners, with second place getting $12,000.

“If she wins this Saturday, she will only be the second greyhound to win all three of the Big 3 races,” says Sarah Mears, PBKC’s assistant publicity director.

Gates open at 11:30 a.m. with free admission. Throughout the day will be 15 superfecta races, including a pick 4 with a $10,000 guarantee.

Janice Dean will run in Race 12, the invitational.

Track celebrations include Irish dancers from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. and live music from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

The track’s busiest season is until Easter, Mears says. “But we continue to have high attendance with the Triple Crown through June.”


Seminole Casino Coconut Creek (5550 NW 40th St., 954-977-6700, will host pop legend Dionne Warwick (“Walk on By,” “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?”) on April 8. Tickets cost from $65 to $100.

Rhythm and blues singer Charlie Wilson (“There Goes My Baby,” “You Dropped a Bomb on Me”) will sing at Hard Rock Live (Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino (1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 800-937-0010, on May 11. Tickets ($70 to $180) go on sale 10 a.m. Friday, March 17.

The 11-time Grammy nominee released an album titled “In It to Win It” in February. In the ’70s and ’80s, he was the lead singer of the Gap Band.

Fantasia Barrino, who won Season 3 of “American Idol,” will perform as a special guest.

The Platters (“Only You (And You Alone),” “The Great Pretender”), with a lineup that’s different from their heyday, will be onstage at the Casino at Dania Beach (301 E. Dania Beach Blvd., 954-920-1511, on May 13. Tickets start at $15 and go up to $100 for the VIP section.
