Coconut Creek man wins $1K for life (kind of)

It's advertised as $1,000 a week for life, but the most recent winner said, aww heck, just give me all the cash now.

Owen R. Louis, 53, of Coconut Creek, claimed a top prize in the $1,000 A Week for Life  $2 Scratch-Off game, at Florida Lottery headquarters in Tallahassee. Louis chose to receive the winnings as a one-time, lump-sum payment of $829,146.71.

He purchased his winning Scratch-Off ticket at Publix, located at 4760 W. Hillsboro Blvd. in Coconut Creek.

The $2 game launched on Feb. 5. There are two $1,000 a week for life top prizes remaining in the game. The overall odds of winning a prize are one in 4.46.

Lucky for Life has been around awhile. The first Lucky for Life-themed Scratch-Off game was introduced 17 years ago with the launch of Win for Life, a $2 game. In 2004, the $10 game Set for Life was launched, offering $5,000 a year for life top prizes. Later, the first $20 Lucky for Life ticket offering $100,000 a year for life top prizes was introduced.

The Florida Lottery offers more than 60 Scratch-Off games at any given time through vending machines and counter displays at more than 13,000 retailers statewide. They make up about 58 percent of all ticket sales.
