Now Seminole Hard Rock offers big-money ($100K buy-in) tourney

They're really serious about this poker thing: The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollwyood, which earlier this year announced a $10 million guarantee poker tournament for late August, on Thursday released news that it has another big-money event in the same series.

 Really big money.

 Buy-in will be $100,000.

It is called the Florida Super High-Roller Tournament, and is part of a new series the World Poker Tour is rolling out (also announced Thursday). It will start at noon Aug. 26 at Hard Rock Live.

WPT Alpha8 is a newly announced global series of super high-roller poker tournaments to be broadcast on FOX Sports 1 beginning in March 2014. The press release said it will be held in some of the world’s most prestigious venues in North America, Europe, Asia, and South Africa and each event will feature a buy-in of at least $100,000.

Tournament structures designed by WPT Executive Tour Director Matt Savage will ensure plenty of play at all levels throughout the event and allow World Poker Tour to provide four hours of televised action, according to the Seminoles' press release.

“The WPT Alpha8 tournament raises the volume on this already highly anticipated series,” said Larry Mullin, Seminole Gaming COO. He also called it a "game-changer."

Let's pause for a breath here. Off the top of my head, the World Series of Poker has a $50K event each year, and last year had a $1M buy-in event for charity, One Drop. This year, it was $111,111, called Little One Drop. My thinking is that poker players have built more alliances as time has moved on. Many players have backers, investors and, heck, for the right price, I'd buy a piece of the right player. So, if you're questioning who's going to play in this, I'd think you'd be surprised.*

The Seminoles say beginning Aug. 8, viewers will be able to watch live streaming action of the SHRPO series at and can take in the Championship Event in Paradise Live on Aug 28.
