$45K Fantasy 5 ticket sold in Margate about to expire

We're getting pretty lax with our lottery tickets in Florida: Days after a $16 million Powerball winner went to a waste, a Fantasy 5 ticket worth $45,087.48 sold in Margate is about to expire.

The 180-day deadline to claim the top prize is Thursday, Dec. 5, before midnight. The winning numbers for the June 8 drawing were: 3-8-9-18-27 and the Quick Pick ticket was purchased at Chevron, located at 5200 Sample Road in Margate.

On Nov. 21, a Powerball ticket sold in Tampa that was part of a three-way $50 million split expired.

While any Florida Lottery retailer can validate the winning ticket, the Fantasy 5 top prize must be claimed at a Florida Lottery district office or at Florida Lottery headquarters in Tallahassee.

Players can obtain additional information by calling the Lottery’s Customer Service Office at (850) 487-7787 or visiting the Florida Lottery’s website at www.flalottery.com.

If the prize goes unclaimed, 80 percent of the unclaimed prize is transferred to the state’s trust fund that benefits education. The remaining 20 percent is put into a prize pool, which is later used to fund new games and promotions.

"What's he doing sitting down here?" a man asks as my son seats himself at the poker table. I flinch for a second, but I realize the man is joking when he adds, "Doesn't he know you have to be old to play in this game?"
