5 years: Thanks, readers!

Back on March 8, 2008, I embarked on a new frontier: Writing a gambling column.

We celebrated five years of poker, slots and the whole casino spectrum today in the newsroom, with a red velvet cake. (There's still a piece or two near me if you're around.)

So far, it's been an adventure, with all kinds of fascinating people (I mean, characters) and a world I never otherwise would have known.

I just want to say thanks to anyone who's ever read my stuff, called with a news tip or even just sent me a press release. You all are the best!

Nick Sortal began playing 3-card "gut" and "Indian poker" on high school band trips, moved on to "night baseball" and "pass the trash" during a Dr Pepper-infused midnight game in the 1980s at the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, and now play in a regular neighborhood hold 'em game in Plantation. He's been writing about gambling life in South Florida casinos since 2007, which means sitting around watching poker on TV counts as research.
