The slots were spinning and the cards were flying and Michele Blanco was taking me to work on a casino story.
But first we had to detour. The track announcer had announced "And they're off..."
So she needed to watch the race. The story could wait.
For those who have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Blanco the past 21 years at Calder Casino and Race Course, this would not be a surprise. The daughter of two trainers, Blanco, if you allow me the cliche, has horse racing in her blood. As director of advertising and public relations at the track, for many she has been the face and contact point of Calder.
But Thursday was her last day. She has decided to pursue a career in teaching, and is looking to move to the Martin County area.
This is no-push-out-the-door thing; Calder has already begun looking for her replacement. They're not going to find one, but here's hoping they find someone with her passion and professionalism.
