Lottery introduces 'Jackpot Combo'

Fast-food restaurants push combo meals, phone companies bundle service and, now, the Florida Lottery offers its version of a package deal.

With the $5 Jackpot Combo, players get tickets for Powerball, Florida Lotto with Xtra and Mega Millions. All are quick picks, and the tickets apply to the next drawings.

The combo doesn’t offer a break on the price of the tickets, only the convenience of a quick order. Powerball costs $2 per ticket on its own. Florida Lotto costs $1. Xtra, which multiplies nonjackpot Lotto prizes from two to five times the listed amount, is $1. Mega Millions costs $1.

The package, announced Monday, is designed to create interest in Mega Millions, a national game that Florida joined in May. In the past three months, Floridians have spent $140 million on Powerball tickets, $100 million on Florida Lotto and only $24 million on Mega Millions. One can argue that Powerball's jackpots have been sexier in recent months, making Mega Millions' entry into our state even more difficult.

Xtra could also use a bump. Lottery statistics show just more than $13 million in purchases over the past three months, while about $86 million Lotto tickets were sold.

The tickets also gives patrons four nights of jackpot hope: Powerball and Lotto drawings take place Wednesdays and Saturdays. Mega Millions is drawn Tuesdays and Fridays.
