Gulfstream Park hosted its fourth Florida Derby Charity Poker Tournament on Wednesday, an annual event that benefits the Permanently Disabled Jockey’s Fund.
The 110 player tournament offered a guaranteed prize pool of $10,000, and raised over $7,400 for the foundation. Current and former jockeys John Velazquez, Manoel Cruz, Joe Bravo, Eibar Coa, Angel Cordero, Jerry Lasala, Rene Douglas and Michael Straight are regular participants in the contest, held each year at the Hallandale Beach thoroughbred racing facility.
Chris Gatis won this year's tournament, cashing for $4,689. Rene Douglas netted $1,203 in a four-way chop for third through sixth place, followed by Gulfstream Park jockey Manoel Cruz, finishing eighth and pocketing $461.
