Fireworks tonight at Mardi Gras

If you have a dog, you know that those July Fourth bombs bursting in air spook them.

So imagine if you have a kennel full of dogs. Or horses.

That’s why South Florida’s horse tracks and dog tracks have to be creative when it comes to this holiday.

Still, there are at least three July Fourth-related celebrations at South Florida’s pari-mutuels and a fourth at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

Greyhound racing at Mardi Gras Casino is on hiatus for the summer, but officials decided to book their fireworks show two days early, because the actual holiday is often dedicated to families. So at 9 p.m. Tuesday, a free show will be presented in the grandstand. The casino’s French Quarter Restaurant and Bar will offer a special buffet on Tuesday, for $14.95.

The Village at Gulfstream Park also has families in mind, by celebrating July Fourth from 1 to 4 p.m. at Champion’s Plaza on Thursday. Music, dancing, face painting, cotton candy and popcorn are in the plans.

Calder Casino and Race Course gives away scratch-off cards for up to $1,000 cash from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Thursday (for players who earn at least 25 slot points). They also have a $20 free-play coupon for new and existing members running in Thursday’s SunSentinel, good through July 7, while the Studz Poker Club has $500 high hands from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday. That’s the same day the racetrack holds its Summit of Speed.

The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood will offer a fireworks display, Miami Food Trucks, entertainment and live bands from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday. Music includes New Planets (classic/alternative rock), Tom Jackson (country), Higher Ground (1980s/classic rock/Top 40) and Lovechild (Top 40/R&B/disco/Motown). The event will also include zip lining and a rock-climbing wall, the Budweiser Beer Truck (proceeds benefit the Wounded Warrior Project), stilt-walkers, face painters and henna-tattoo artists.

Julia Dale, the 12-year-old South Florida phenom, will sing the National Anthem, as she did during the last two Miami Heat home games. (By the way, the Heat won both.)
