$12M Lotto win (another one!) for Tamarac Sunoco

A lottery win is supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime event, but lightning has struck again at a Tamarac Sunoco.

The single Florida Lotto winning ticket was sold at Vic's Sunoco in Tamarac, 8291 N. University Drive. It's worth $12 million, and is the first Florida Lotto win in Broward or Palm Beach county since a woman hit at a Davie Publix in September 2012.

Vic's Sunoco also sold a $6 million winner (later claimed by the Herrera Family Trust) on Jan. 7, 2012.

Station management was stunned to learn the news late Sunday afternoon; the Florida Lottery web site posts only the winning city in the first few hours, not the address nor the name of the venue. But it e-mails the venue in its media releases.

Owner Vic Pena, who stands to gain a $50,000 commission spoke via phone but what he said was unintelligible.

"He's hysterical," said employee Dan Vest, after taking the phone back. Vest said Pena has owned the store about nine months. Pena moved from the Dominican Republic to New York several years ago, and owned a grocery mart in Hialeah before making the move here, he said.

Vest says the Tamarac station, adjacent to Renaissance Charter School, is in a changing neighborhood, and not as cemented as a retirement town as it once used to be.

"We have a lot of regulars who play the lottery here," Vest says. "They always say. 'If I win, you'll win.' That would be nice, but I'm just happy someone from here was a winner."

The numbers were 1-8-11-19-46-53. It was not a quick pick. (So the person probably had some reason to play those numbers. That's a little curious because most people play birthdays and 46 and 53 were selected.)

Powerball has not had a Florida winner since 2012 and no South Florida winner since 2010. Mega Millions just started here in May and has yet to yield a Florida winner.
