Rooney’s Golf Foundation held its Fouth Annual Charity Poker Tournament on Saturday in the Poker Room at Palm Beach Kennel Club, and the event set two records: 117 players and $8,283 raised for Autism Project of Palm Beach County, FAU Honors College, Pathways to Independence and Potentia Academy.
Poker Room Director Noah Carbone noted there were 75 walk-ups for the event, which paid 12 spots.
When it got down to four -- David Smith, Bill Adazzio, Bob Rowsky, and Robert Wager -- they decided to chop the money evenly at $905 apiece and play for the WSOP Circuit Main Event Seat, which is in about a month at the kennel club.
Smith emerged over Adazzio; both are regulars, Carbone said.
Celebrity bounties included: John Martin ESPN, Benny "the Boot" from Seaview Radio, Russ Evans of the Golf Exchange and your favorite South Florida gambling writer. Jmart had the lifetime highlight -- a royal flush on the first hand -- but the event is mostly fun, with a lot of once-a-year poker players. I hung in there about three hours, until I had to make a move with a very short stack and ran into an opponent's small pair. Oh, well...
The $50 entry covered the tournament, a buffet, greyhound racing and prizes.
A press release says Rooney’s Golf Foundation has donated $442,500 to local Palm Beach County charities since 2001. Those funds are raised through the golf tournament, 5K and poker events. (FYI, the Rooneys own the kennel club.)
The 7th Annual RGF 5K Run / Walk will be held on Saturday, April 19 at Rooney’s Pub in Abacoa and the 13th Annual RGF tournament is scheduled for late October / early November at PGA National.
