South Florida tops in the 'Best of Gay Cities' awards

South Florida won several “Best of Gay Cities” Awards from Q.Digital, a media company focused on the LGBTQ community.

The San Francisco-based company operates GayCities.com, a location-based social network for things to do, as well as Queerty.com, a news and entertainment site.

Readers from GayCities.com cast more than 48,000 votes for places throughout the world, in 13 categories including favorite destinations, romantic getaways and best bars and clubs, according to the company.

For the best “Singles Scene,” the top honor went to Fort Lauderdale, followed by Montreal, Canada, and Seattle, Wash.

"Over the last several years, Fort Lauderdale has continually grown as the hub of South Florida's LGBTQ scene,” said Scott Gatz, chief executive officer of Q.Digital.

In the “City That Makes You Happy” category, Key West came out on top with a gold award, ahead of Palm Springs, Calif., and Vancouver, Canada.

“Key West’s year-round warm weather, coupled with its restaurants, nightlife and LGBTQ-friendly reputation, has made it the perfect escape for GayCities members,” Gatz said. “Having quickly bounced back following the intense hurricane season this year, it feels right for Key West to have won the ‘City That Makes You Happy’ award.”

Miami got silver in the “Fun in the Sun” category, behind Provincetown, Mass.

And Wilton Manors nabbed a bronze honor for “Best Gayborhood.” Chicago and West Hollywood, Calif., tied for first place in that category.

Each winner received a framed award.
