Miami Beach's Palace Bar expected to close, for now

The Palace Bar isn’t going out without one last big hurrah.

The popular Miami Beach bar and restaurant has been the place for glamorous drag queens to sashay and strut their stuff, entertaining patrons and tourists alike on the Ocean Drive strip. The bar’s tagline: “Every queen needs a palace.”

But after July 4, its home at 1200 Ocean Drive reportedly will close.

Palace owner Thomas Donall could not reach a new agreement with Infinity Real Estate, which purchased the building where the bar had been on the ground floor for three decades, according to The Miami Herald.

“The new rent is so high that we’d never survive,” he told The Herald.

Donnall expects to reopen the bar in a yet-to-be announced new location.

In the meantime, at least one drag queen who found a regular stage at the Palace is saying goodbye in her own big, colorful way. From 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, drag performer Latrice Royale will be hosting a show called “Large And in Charge T-Dance.’’

Royale became a national drag star when she appeared on the fourth season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” reality series, which was formerly on cable network LOGO but now is on VH1.

The bar will also have “The Last Dance Block Party” with deejay Dan Slater on July 4.
