The Grand Resort

Gay tourism in Fort Lauderdale means big bucks. Soooooo in addition to the bar-restuarant-boutique-entertainment infrastructure there are a whole host of gay guesthouses.

Because they offer something extra, here are five of our favorites:

The Grand Resort & Spa: Only a few steps from Fort Lauderdale Beach, the grounds are palatial, the rooms are swanky and the spa is pure nirvana. The Grand has even been known to spark up deals with Broadway shows that come to Broward Center for the Performing Arts (like they did with "La Cage Aux Folles" earlier this summer). 539 N. Birch Road. 954-630-3000.

Pineapple Point Guesthouse & Resort: Just a few blocks from chic shopping mecca Las Olas Boulevard in the tony Victoria Park neighborhood, this guesthouse is the fave rave of "Will & Gracy" star Leslie Jordan. 315 N.E. 16th Terrace. 954-527-0094.

Inn Leather: All you really need to know is that every room has a sling. We've known guests to check in and never leave the grounds their entire visit. 610 S.E. 19th Street. 954-467-1444.

The Schubert: Built in 1953, this retro-fabulous resort was a co-star in the movie "Gays Gone Wild" and has hosted parties for Florence Henderson and Harvey Fierstein. If that doesn't impress you, then maybe its proximity to funky art movie house Gateway Theatre and the fierce mall The Galleria will.

The Royal Palms Resort & Spa: Yes, they have all the amenities that many other gay guesthouses near the beach, although we think the spa and the gym are superior. But what the Royal Palms also has is some pretty mouth-watering photographic art - well-hung art at that - by local shutterbug Dennis Dean.717 Breakers Avenue. 954-564-6444.
