Turner Classic Movies announced Monday that it will honor actress Cicely Tyson with a hand-and-footprint ceremony during its film festival next month.

"For decades, Tyson has been at the forefront of a shift away from clichéd, stereotypical characters of color to playing multidimensional, strong black women," “TCM Prime Time” host Ben Mankiewicz said in a statement.

"To fully appreciate the magnitude of the impact Cicely Tyson has had, listen to Angela Bassett … list the women who've influenced her most profoundly," Mankiewicz said. "Bassett names Shirley Chisholm and Barbara Jordan, two pioneering African American members of Congress, along with an actress — Cicely Tyson."

The ceremony will take place at Hollywood's TCL Chinese Theatre on April 27 during the ninth annual TCM Classic Film Festival.

Tyson, an Emmy and Tony award winner and Oscar and Golden Globe nominee, has worked in the industry for more than 60 years. Her performances have included seminal roles in 1972's "Sounder" (for which she earned an Oscar nomination), 1977's TV production of "Roots," 1974's "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" (which got her the Emmy), and 2013's "The Trip to Bountiful," for which she won a Tony.

This is the eight consecutive year that TCM has featured a hand and footprint ceremony at the Chinese Theatre as part of its festival. Previous honorees include Kim Novak, Jane Fonda, Jerry Lewis, Christopher Plummer, Francis Ford Coppola and Carl and Rob Reiner
