Obama supports gay marriage (May 10, 2012)

There was a whiff of desperation about it, but Obama finally came out and did the right thing. He had been hoping to finesse and waffle until the Supreme Court decision made gay marriage moot, but Joe the Mouth went off the reservation, and suddenly everybody wanted answers.

This story will probably go away in a few days, since Obama will move on in hopes that a mere declaration of his views is enough meat to throw to his slavering base, and he won’t do anything proactive until after the election. Mitt Romney, who has been emphasizing for months that jobs and the economy are the only issues that matter, would look pretty opportunistic if he tried to make hay with a cultural issue now.

In fact, he more or less downplayed it during a campaign stop in Oklahoma the other day. As a one-time resident of that state, I know that had Romney wanted to make a major issue out of Obama’s announcement, Oklahoma would have been the place to whup the good Christian folk into a righteous frenzy. But he didn’t, which means he views the gay marriage issue as a bomb that could blow up in his hand if he isn’t careful.

Best to leave the rabble-rousing to the experts—hot-headed purists like newly-minted Swiss citizen Michele Bachmann, whose adopted country recently passed a law banning minarets. I wonder what the Swiss constitution says about same-sex marriage.
