Stolen Cell Phone Leads to Lost Loot, Suspect Arrested
28 year old Neil Hefner is accused of breaking into dozens of cars in Ventura and Los Angeles Counties.
Neil Hefner, 28, was arrested after a tip led detectives to the suspect's Tarzana home.
One of the victims was looking for a new cellphone on Craigslist after his had been stolen. He saw one that looked just like his old one and bought it, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. John Benedict. When he received the phone, the victim noticed that many of his contacts were still programmed into the device. He then contacted deputies.
Benedict says the seller's return address was on the package so deputies got a search warrant and went to Hefner's home and arrested him.
They found 163 cell phones along with computers, wallets, gift cards and rare coins.
Hefner has been booked for investigation of burglary and bail has been set at $50,000.
